Netflix Ends 30-Day Free Trial Worldwide: Here's What It Means for Viewers

Free trials have long been Netflix's go-to strategy to let potential subscribers sample its vast library before committing to a paid plan.

You Can't Get a Free Netflix Trial Anymore

As first reported by The TV Answer Man, Netflix has quietly discontinued free trial signups across most countries. To access its full content library, you'll now need a paid subscription from day one.

Historically, Netflix offered 7- and 30-day trials to build user engagement and convert free viewers to paying members. Today, the Netflix Help Center clearly states this option is unavailable in the vast majority of regions worldwide.

Exceptions persist in select markets like Portugal and Switzerland, though it's unclear how long they'll last.

This global shift builds on prior moves: Netflix axed trials in Mexico back in 2018 and began phasing them out in the US this month.

Boasting over 182 million subscribers, Netflix—one of the world's top streaming giants—is cracking down on 'trial-and-bail' users amid fierce competition from other platforms.

Can I Still Watch Netflix for Free?

While traditional trials are history, limited free access remains. A Netflix spokesperson told Variety the company is "investigating various marketing promotions...to attract new members and provide them with a great Netflix experience."

In April 2020, Netflix shared select documentaries on YouTube, including the acclaimed Our Planet narrated by Sir David Attenborough.

Additionally, since August 2020, some original content like Stranger Things and The Two Popes has been viewable without a subscription in certain cases.

Do Other Streaming Services Offer Free Trials?

Absolutely—competitors are keeping the door open. Amazon Prime, Paramount+, and HBO Max provide free trials of varying lengths. Apple even recently extended free months of Apple TV+ to retain existing users.
