Does Netflix Still Offer a 30-Day Free Trial? Availability Explained

Netflix leads the pack among paid streaming services, boasting the largest subscriber base worldwide. Most users kick off their subscription with a free trial.

That said, free trials are no longer available in most regions. Here, we'll break down the current status and share proven ways to enjoy Netflix content without paying upfront.

Does Netflix Offer a 30-Day Free Trial?

For years, Netflix provided a 30-day free trial. New users could sign up with payment details, binge-watch unlimited content across all devices, and cancel before billing kicked in—all at no cost.

The trial was once available globally. However, Netflix ended it in Mexico in 2018 and phased it out worldwide by October 2020.

Today, only select countries like Portugal and Switzerland still offer it. To check your region's status, visit the Netflix Help Center and select your country from the Current information display for dropdown.

Netflix hasn't publicly detailed the decision, but with rivals like Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, and HBO Max in the mix, the company prioritizes converting users to paid subscribers. Trials also risked high churn after the free period.

How to Watch Netflix for Free

The 30-day trial may be gone, but legitimate options remain to access Netflix content at no cost.

1. Stream Netflix Documentaries on YouTube

In April 2020, Netflix shared educational documentaries on YouTube to support teachers and students amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Watch them without an account via the YouTube Educational Documentaries Playlist. Highlights include episodes of Explained, full films like Knock Down the House and Chasing Coral, and David Attenborough's Our Planet series.

2. Enjoy Netflix Originals Without Signing Up

Since August 2020, Netflix has offered select originals for free. Titles like Bird Box, Stranger Things, and Murder Mystery are accessible in the Netflix Watch Free section—no account required.

Note: Available only on desktop browsers and Android devices.

3. Join a Family Netflix Account

If a friend or family member subscribes, ask to use their account. Netflix allows up to five profiles per account, each with personalized recommendations and watchlists.

Standard plans support two simultaneous streams; Premium allows four. See our guide on Netflix simultaneous streams for details.

The account owner can add your profile via their icon > Manage Profiles > Add Profile.

Top Free Streaming Alternatives

Beyond Netflix previews, services like Pluto TV and Tubi offer ad-supported content around the clock—no subscription needed.
