How to Stream Videos from PC to TV Using VLC Nightly Builds and Chromecast

While casting Chrome tabs to your Google Chromecast is straightforward with the official extension, streaming local files from your PC to TV requires a few extra steps. As a media streaming expert with years of hands-on experience, I've tested the most reliable methods.

The latest VLC nightly builds include an experimental Chromecast streaming feature, primarily for Windows users (Mac support is limited, but alternatives exist). This lets you beam movies, music, or photos from your hard drive to the big screen effortlessly. We've successfully used it for various formats, though results can vary.

Important caveat: These are beta nightly versions with no official support—use at your own risk, as they may be unstable. Per reports from Ars Technica, compatibility isn't perfect for all video files.

To set it up: Download the compatible VLC nightly build for your system, then navigate to Tools > Output Performance. Select your Chromecast from the list, and play your file—it'll stream directly to your TV. Get the builds here.

Prefer a safer option? Try the Videostream Chrome app for Chromecast. It simplifies browsing your PC files and streams them seamlessly, with on-the-fly conversion.
