Watch and record over-the-air (OTA) TV for free on your PC. This legal setup uses NextPVR, a free Windows program, to simplify the process.
Broadcast networks like ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC charge cable providers for retransmission rights—yet they freely transmit their signals over the airwaves. This contributes to rising pay-TV costs, but you can access them directly with an antenna.
With some technical savvy, pair an antenna with recording capabilities to capture shows and skip commercials. Integrate it with Kodi, the leading open-source media center, for a seamless experience. (Related: How to Set Up Your XBMC Media Center; top Kodi add-ons for TV, sports, and gaming.)

We touched on this in our deep dive into the true cost of cutting the cord. (Related: Considering Canceling Cable? The True Cost of Cutting the Cord.) Today, we'll cover the details.
For years, I relied on Windows Media Center as the top PVR software. (Related: The Best PVR: Windows Media Center.) NextPVR is my go-to alternative now—reliable, flexible, and free. Other options exist; share yours in the comments.
Use AntennaWeb.org to identify local stations and their directions.

Your PC needs a TV tuner card to receive broadcasts. NextPVR recommends Hauppauge models; I've successfully used the Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-2250 ($100), also endorsed by Lifehacker.
USB tuners work too—search 'tuner model + NextPVR' on Google for compatibility.
Pair it with a digital antenna like the Mohu Leaf, which delivers excellent HD reception in my setup. (Available on Amazon; related giveaway: Enjoy Free HD TV with Mohu Leaf.)

Most digital antennas suffice, or build your own. (Related: Ditch Cable with a DIY HDTV Antenna.)

Upfront costs? Cable rents DVRs for $10/month plus fees—this pays for itself quickly if you cut the cord.
Install your tuner's drivers per instructions, then download NextPVR from NextPVR.com.
Run the straightforward Windows installer. Launch NextPVR, right-click for Settings.

Under Devices, select your tuner and click Device Settings to scan channels.

Signal strength varies by location—adjust your antenna and match results to AntennaWeb.org.
In Channels, rename as needed, then Update EPG for schedules. Set encoders in Encoders. Under Recording, redirect saves from C:\ if desired.

Adjust live TV buffer in Miscellaneous.

Explore further settings later. You can now watch live TV in NextPVR or integrate with Kodi.
Kodi excels at organizing media, streaming online content, and delivering remote-friendly live TV.
In Kodi, go to TV > Settings > "Enable Live TV." Install and configure the NextPVR add-on.

Use defaults unless running Kodi on another PC (set Hostname to NextPVR PC's IP). Enable live TV buffering in Advanced.
Tweak TV settings further—add channel logos for polish.

Access channels, recordings, and DVR from Kodi's Live TV menu. Network-wide access: use NextPVR PC's IP on other devices.
Cord-cutters: Skip set-top boxes; PCs offer unmatched power and flexibility. (Related: Cord Cutters: Ignore Set-Top Boxes and Use a PC.)
Advanced tweaks include Kodi remotes, Comskip for ad-skipping, and NextPVR's web scheduler. I'm happy to discuss in comments and expand in future guides.
