Two Must-Attend French Music Festivals: Francofolies de La Rochelle and Les Vieilles Charrues

Every summer, France hosts some of Europe's most renowned music festivals, drawing hundreds of thousands of passionate fans. Among the highlights are the Francofolies de La Rochelle and Les Vieilles Charrues.

Francofolies de La Rochelle: Celebrating French Music for All Tastes

For over 30 years, the Francofolies has filled La Rochelle with the sounds of exceptional French music. Launched in 1985 by Jean-Louis Foulquier and Philippe Friboulet, it's now directed by the Société des Francofolies team, including Gérard Lacroix, Gérard Pont, and Frédéric Charpail. Held in July, this event promotes French and Francophone songwriting and music, having welcomed more than 1,000 artists and averaging 120,000 attendees annually across six stages with over 100 concerts.

The festival has launched careers like those of Étienne Daho and Pauline Croze, while legends such as Léo Ferré, Bernard Lavilliers, and Jacques Higelin have graced its stages. Virtually every major French artist—from Zazie and Cœur de Pirate to Francis Cabrel, Soprano, Laurent Voulzy, Patricia Kaas, Marc Lavoine, Georges Moustaki, and Yannick Noah—has performed here. Beyond stars, it spotlights emerging talents and runs parallel initiatives like the Chantier des Francos to train young artists entering the industry, and Francos Educ to inspire the next generation with French song.

Les Vieilles Charrues: A Transgenerational Music Spectacle

Recognized as one of Europe's premier music festivals, Les Vieilles Charrues has thrived for over 25 years with its diverse, intergenerational lineup. Held mid-July in Carhaix-Plouguer, Finistère, over four days, it attracts nearly 200,000 festival-goers—peaking at 280,000 in 2017. In a welcoming atmosphere, it features rock, French chanson, techno, Celtic music, hip-hop, world music, and more. Founded by Christian Troadec, it began casually in 1992 with 500 friends before exploding in popularity.

Global icons like Johnny Hallyday, Charles Aznavour, Lenny Kravitz, Ayo, Stromae, Eddy Mitchell, Scorpions, Cypress Hill, Snoop Dogg, David Guetta, and Bob Dylan have performed here, solidifying its status.
