Plex offers robust subtitle support out of the box, though it's disabled by default. Below, I'll walk you through every step to automate downloads, add local files, and enable subtitles seamlessly.
If your media lacks local subtitles, Plex can fetch them from OpenSubtitles.org using its built-in media scraper.
Start by navigating to Settings > Agents. Under the Movies > Plex Movie tab (or Films > Plex Movie in some regions), check OpenSubtitles.org and drag it to the top of the list.
Next, switch to Shows > TheTVDB (or TV Shows > TheTVDB), check and prioritize OpenSubtitles.org.
These changes ensure Plex grabs subtitles for new library additions. To select languages, click the gear icon next to OpenSubtitles.org. Optionally log in with your account credentials, then choose up to three preferred languages from the dropdowns.
Agent changes apply only to new media. For your current library, refresh metadata: From the Plex sidebar, select your library, click the three dots, and choose Manage Library > Refresh All Metadata.
For large libraries, this takes time. Target specifics by opening a title, clicking the three dots on its page, and selecting Fix Match > Refresh Metadata.
OpenSubtitles.org is comprehensive but not exhaustive. Download missing files from trusted sites like Subscene, SubtitleSeeker, or SRTFiles.
Plex supports SRT, SMI, SSA, ASS, and MTB formats. Avoid VOBSUB or PGS for broader compatibility.
Place files in the same folder as the media. Use precise naming:

Finally, scan the library: Library three-dots menu > Scan Library Files. Plex will associate subtitles automatically.
On a title's Plex page, expand the subtitles dropdown to view all available languages. Select one to set it for that video, overriding global settings.
Go to Settings > Languages. Uncheck Automatically select audio and subtitle tracks.
Set Subtitle Mode to Always enabled and Prefer subtitles in to your language. Save changes.
For on-demand control, during playback, click the gear icon in the bottom-right. Select a subtitle language from the list to activate it instantly.
