As fans worldwide recover from the gripping twists of Squid Game's debut season, director and creator Hwang Dong-hyuk offers intriguing hints about a sequel.
The Netflix smash hit has dominated conversations for two weeks straight. With millions binge-watching the first season, Hwang Dong-hyuk is already addressing season 2 possibilities.
No spoilers here—even if you haven't caught the nine episodes yet. In a Variety interview, Hwang focused on the production challenges of the first season.
He openly shared his struggles with collaboration: "I'm not very good at teamwork," he admitted, vowing to evolve his approach. Directing Squid Game proved a grueling, high-stress endeavor. While season 2 lacks a finalized script, Hwang is clear: "If there's a sequel, I won't tackle it solo. I'd assemble a writers' room and partner with acclaimed directors."
The first season's creation was arduous. "At first, I downed half a bottle of soju [a traditional Korean spirit] to let the creative juices flow. I can't do that anymore," he revealed.
Scripting proved especially tough for a series format versus film. "It took me six months to write and rewrite the first two episodes," Hwang noted.
Enlisting a powerhouse team promises smoother workflows and a swifter path to season 2—benefiting creators and viewers alike.
