AAVE, originating in U.S. Black communities and influenced by second-language acquisition processes, predates Gen Z and the internet. Pokimane's stream title read: "on God For Real For Real? It’s bussin bussin here…" Fans accused her of mocking the dialect, leading to her response.

On August 20, Pokimane tweeted: "Sorry for the late night tweet but I wanted to apologize if I misused aave in my twitch title today, I didn't know some of these terms were aaves and didn't meant not in a mocking way. trying to change the vod title too 😊 lots of love to those who brought it to my attention!" She explained she was unaware of the terms' AAVE origins.
