The title draws from the mythical griffin—a lion-bodied creature with a raptor's head—the Sarmatians' totem animal.

Ferri and Conrad weave in contemporary nods, including a character named "Chloroquine." On the Roman side, meet Dansonjus and Terinconus, a satirical take on author Michel Houellebecq.
