Epic Games Eyes Fortnite's Return to iOS Following Apple's Payment Policy Updates

After years of intense legal battles between Epic Games and Apple, Fortnite's return to iOS appears increasingly likely. Apple faces one of its biggest antitrust challenges, with a trial that could reshape its ironclad control over the App Store—a powerhouse generating billions annually while serving over 1.6 billion iPhones, iPads, and other devices.

Epic Games, the powerhouse American video game developer and publisher headquartered in Cary, North Carolina, also rakes in billions from its titles like Fortnite. Recent developments suggest Fortnite could soon reclaim its spot on iOS.

Will Fortnite Return to iOS?

Apple and Epic Games clashed in a landmark antitrust trial—one of the tech industry's most pivotal cases. The dispute escalated in August 2020 when Apple removed Fortnite from the App Store after Epic introduced direct payments for iOS and Android users, bypassing Apple and Google fees to pass savings to players. Apple and Google responded by halting Fortnite updates, with Apple even threatening to bar Epic from developing software for its platforms, including the Unreal Engine.

Recently, prominent Fortnite YouTubers like Ali-A and Saunders Technica shared clips hinting at a potential iOS return, sparking excitement in the community alongside a subtle game update. Ali-A also dissected a leaked Season 5 trailer circulating on Twitter (now X).

Apple has invited Epic to bring Fortnite back exclusively using Apple Payments—a move critics see as preserving its in-app payment monopoly, stifling competition and driving up prices. Apple counters that Epic created its own issues and could relist by simply removing the rival system. Epic CEO Tim Sweeney maintains the fight is for all developers on Apple's platform.

Until Epic complies with Apple's policies or terms shift, Fortnite remains sidelined on iOS.
