Game 2 of the Western Conference Semifinals on Sunday echoed Houston's Game 4 against the Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round. The Rockets exploded in the third quarter, hitting their first eight threes to lead by 15 late, but faltered when James Harden rested. They couldn't regain their shot in the fourth, and OKC pulled away.

In Game 2 versus the Lakers, Houston struggled early but surged into the fourth with hot shooting. Yet, another hot quarter led to a cold one. The Rockets' 'Live and Die by 3' mantra means every possession counts.

JaVale McGee's injury lets the Lakers go big, troubling Houston. Anthony Davis dominates with five against them, and LeBron thrives anywhere.

Russell Westbrook struggled in Game 2—that's part of his game, and it persists. But Houston can't let Rajon Rondo (+28 +/-) shred their bench again, nor Jeff Green (-26) falter after strong play, or Austin Rivers (-18 in seven minutes).

Reasons for optimism: Expect regression. The Lakers won't shoot 57% from the field or 44% from three repeatedly. Scott Foster won't ref every game. Harden faces softer defense than Lu Dort and quietly rose in Game 2; Eric Gordon looks sharp.
