Josh Homme: The Rock Legend Behind Queens of the Stone Age and Beyond

Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme secured a Grammy Award in 2021, further cementing his enduring influence in rock music. His dynamic relationship with the Grammys echoes the twists and turns of his remarkable 37-year career.

While best known as the driving force of Queens of the Stone Age, Homme has shaped the landscape of modern rock since 1987 through collaborations with diverse artists and innovative projects. This guide traces his prolific journey and lasting contributions to the genre.

Kyuss: Josh Homme's First Band

At just 14 years old in 1987, Josh Homme formed his debut band in Palm Desert with two classmates. Blending punk rock and heavy metal, he handled guitar duties as they evolved from Katzenjammer to Sons of Kyuss, and finally Kyuss.

Dedicated fans trekked into the desert for raw, generator-powered performances. Kyuss released four albums between 1987 and 1995, pioneering the stoner rock movement of the 1990s.

Queens of the Stone Age

Following Kyuss's 1996 disbandment, Homme launched Queens of the Stone Age, a band still thriving today with seven Grammy nominations. Initially named Gamma Ray, they rebranded for legal reasons and dropped their acclaimed self-titled debut in 1998.

To date, they've released seven studio albums and four EPs, spanning alternative rock, stoner rock, hard rock, and alternative metal.

Desert Sessions and Other Projects

Homme's Desert Sessions, started in 1997, are improvisational recordings at Rancho De La Luna. These spontaneous gatherings with rotating artists produced 12 volumes, the latest in 2019, and earned Homme his 2021 Grammy.

In 1998, Homme and friend Jesse Hughes birthed Eagles of Death Metal as a Desert Sessions jest, yielding four studio albums. From 2009 to 2010, he teamed with Dave Grohl for supergroup Them Crooked Vultures, releasing one album that clinched a 2011 Grammy.
