Apple's Bold Vision: Augmented Reality to Transform TV on Apple TV+

In the fiercely competitive streaming market, Apple is differentiating Apple TV+ by integrating augmented reality (AR), allowing viewers to interact with shows using their iPhone or iPad.

Augmented Reality Debuts on Apple TV+

Reports from Bloomberg indicate Apple will roll out AR features on Apple TV+ in 2021. This technology overlays digital characters or objects onto the real world via your device—for instance, bringing a lion from an Apple TV+ nature documentary into your living room.

These AR experiences will serve as optional bonus content, similar to director's commentaries or deleted scenes, enhancing shows and movies without being essential viewing.

Sources familiar with the project say the feature was originally slated for 2020 but delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic's impact on development. Apple declined to comment when approached by Bloomberg.

Bonus Content to Boost Apple TV+ Subscriptions

Beyond AR, Apple is expanding into podcasts with spin-offs from its Apple TV+ series and original audio content potentially adapted for TV.

Apple TV+ is priced at $4.99 per month, with many users accessing a free year via Apple device purchases—a promotion nearing its one-year anniversary. An upcoming Apple One bundle will combine Apple TV+ with services like Apple Music and Apple Arcade.

AR and VR: Cornerstones of Apple's Future

Rumors suggest AR and VR will define Apple's roadmap, including enhanced scanners in the next iPhone for quicker AR loading.

Apple is reportedly developing an AR/VR headset for 2022 release, followed by AR glasses in 2023.

These innovations promise thrilling new ways to experience Apple TV+ content.
