Fortnite, the massively popular battle royale game from Epic Games, is experiencing widespread server downtime today. This coincides with the rollout of the 19.01 update across PlayStation, Xbox, PC, Nintendo Switch, and mobile platforms—the first major patch since Fortnite Chapter 3 launched.
Players are seeing error messages like "You don't have permission to play Fortnite" when attempting to queue. Downtime is standard during updates, with matchmaking disabled earlier this afternoon.
At 1:13 p.m. ET, Epic Games acknowledged the issue on their status page, stating they are investigating and will provide updates once resolved. Streamers and players on Twitter have shared frustrations, noting inaccessible account details as well.
The Epic Games Store is also affected, with login problems and degraded performance reported. Epic describes this as a "major failure" on their status site.

"Fortnite is currently unavailable and players cannot log in while we investigate an issue. We will provide more information when we have a solution," Epic stated. Players should avoid repeated login attempts, as the downtime is expected to be temporary.
